She was always impartiall and distribute even a small piece of sweet she received from someone among all the four of us equally. Today we have more money and facilities, but the taste of that sweet still lingers in my mouth. Since, I have been the first and only girl child of the house, I wielded good amount of influence at the house, but, I never mis-used it and always stood first in my studies, games and cultural activities. The extra curricular activities always kept me in the limelight.
I always believed that becoming a Bank officer is the best option for ladies, but, my fate drove me to become an MD of an organisation.
Despite scoring good marks in the examination, I was not able to join a course of my liking. My father, who was struggling to meet both the ends , told me ‘I can only pay for your tuition fees, therefore, join a college that is close to the railway line, so that you don't need to spend anything extra other than for the season ticket’. I took his advice and joined my B.A. Economics degree at DG Vaishnava College close to the Chrompet railway station. While studying in the college I took interest to study Hindi and passed all the examinations.
Though both my father and my grandmother were working, the low salary drawn by them had prompted my father to discontinue my brother's education and ask him to join a low level employment in railways. I was feeling guilty of attending the college, when my younger brother who was interested in studying, was forced to discontinue his education. Being a Central Government employment, my father was adamant to send him for the work. For the first time I differed with my father's view and argued for the continuing of my brother's education. My grandmother appreciated my stand and supported me.
I started taking Hindi tuitions to contribute to the family kitty. I was happy to find that a good number of people joined the tuition classes. A number of my college mates got married, immediately after completing the college course. Since, my family considered education as the best asset for a woman, I was confident of marrying only after joining some employment. After completing my M.A. Public Administration through the correspondence course, I joined as a teacher in a private school.
Through the contact of my friends I got introduced to my husband Nagarajan and both of us were willing to get married. But, my father wanted me to marry someone employed in government service, whereas, my husband’s family was engaged and interested only in doing business. To the surprise of my father my husband Nagarajan joined income tax service solely for the sake of marrying me. The marriage took place with the consensus of both the families. Exactly after two years my husband resigned his government employment to undertake business again.
