It was an evening … a seven-year old little girl was playing by herself …at that time, another little girl came there and asked her whether she could allow her to play with her … on a nod from the seven-year old, the new girl joined in the game and started playing.

When asked for her name, the new girl said that her name was Kamakshi and that she, along with her parents had come to the village only a few days back and that they lived nearby. When the small girl asked Kamakshi whether she could come daily to play with her, Kamakshi replied in the affirmative. The little girl expressed her disappointment to Kamakshi that nobody in the village played with her because she was very poor and lived in a hut. Kamakshi consoled her and promised to come daily to play with her. At this, the little girl was surprised that Kamakshi, who looked as though belonging to a rich family was willing to play with her, that too, daily. On returning home, she told her parents all about Kamakshi. But her parents, dazed with fear told the little girl not to play with Kamakshi because they were afraid that Kamakshi’s parents might not like it and might even harm the little girl. At this, the little girl cried a lot and slept off praying to Goddess Mariamma.

The next day morning, Kamakshi was standing in front of the hut with seven or eight more girls with some sticks for play. On seeing the little girl, Kamakshi said, “I know you were crying throughout night yesterday, thinking about me. I am going to be with you only. All these girls have come to play with us.” The parents of the little girl were surprised at this. When asked about her identity, Kamakshi replied, “I’ve come to play with these little girls. I’ll be sitting there inside the cave at the northeastern direction of the hill.” When the parents of the little girl asked her about her parents, Kamakshi said, “They are playing ‘siddhu’. From today onwards, I’ll be your daughter’s bosom friend. I’ve told my parents a lot about your daughter. You just wait and watch. All your miseries will disappear with today evening. Then you’ll be the richest in the entire village!” The parents of the little girl couldn’t understand anything from her words.

An elderly person came along with Kamakshi in the evening. He gave a parcel to the father of the little girl. When the village farmer opened it, he saw gold coins glittering. Within one month, the little girl and her family became very rich. But, Kamakshi and the elderly man were not to be seen thereafter.

One night, Kamakshi appeared in the dream of the little girl and told her that she was Kamakshi siddha and that the elderly person was Kubhera siddha. Some of the villagers who grew jealous of the farmer (the little girl’s father) tried to kill him during midnight. Kamakshi siddha came in the form of a dog and drove them all away, biting them very hard. And, on another occasion, when some other people tried to set the house of the farmer on fire, the huts of all those miscreants caught fire and were destroyed. Kamakshi siddha is believed to exist in ‘arupa’ form in Srirangapattinam even today. She informs the concerned people through the voice from the sky when she helps children. It is believed that if children pray to her earnestly, she fulfills all their justifiable wishes.

Many child-siddhas do exist among us even today. Kamakshi siddha is one among them.
