Potpourri of titbits about cinema - Vijayakumari
MGR, addressing the audience, said in a function that Vijayakumari was the only Tamil artiste who had the rare talent of transforming herself into the character she did and pronouncing Tamil words perfectly with cent percent accuracy. Vijayakumari’s film career was a saga of successes thanks to her unparalleled acting and dialogue delivery. She was born to Ramasamy Gownder – Thangalakshmi Ammal as their second child. She belongs to Mettupalayam of Coimbatore District. She danced to the song ‘Vaasamulla pooparippaene ..’ of the film Vedaala Ulagam at her school’s annul day and won a prize for her performance. Her teacher and co-students sowed the seed of ambition for film acting in her mind after this incident and Vijayakumari got the permission of her parents to enter cinema, winning over their strong opposition.
When AVM Studios advertised for new faces, Vijayakumari applied with her photograph. She was selected and was given training in dancing and acting. She was enrolled on a monthly salary. She was introduced in AVM’s ‘Kula deivam’, opposite to S. S. Rajendran, who was the hero of the film. But before the movie released, VIjayakumari’s mother died and Vijayakumari was totally shattered.
It was SSR, who comforted her at that sorrowful moment and subsequently he gave her a place in his heart as well as his life by marrying her. Her debut movie got her recognition and a plethora of offers followed. ‘Vanjikkottai vaalibhan’, ‘Raajtilak’, ‘Kalyanaparisu’, ‘Petra maganai vitra annai’ were some of her unforgettable films of the period that followed. Side by side, Vijayakumari and SSR paired together and acted in stage plays also including ‘Mani makudam’, ‘Thenpaandiveeran’, ‘Pudhu vellam’, ‘Mudhalaali’ and ‘Muthu mandapam’.
