Potpourri of tidbits about Tamil cinema - Kalaignar Karunanidhi
When the car carrying Kalaignar Karunanidhi entered the AVM Studio on the morning of 9/9/2004 (Thursday) for the inauguration of the film Kannamma, he immediately felt proud and joyous on seeing the members of the cinema world assembled at the studio.
Rajakumari which came in 1947 was the first film for which Kalaignar penned the story and dialogue. He wrote story and dialogue for 55 films afterwards and 'Puthiya Parasakthi' which came in 1996 was his last film. He was jubilant over penning the story and dialogue for Kannamma his 56th film after a span of 8 years. It was a tense and anxious moment for me and my fellow scribes who went there for news collection to listen the talking of Kalaignar who has entered the cine field with renowned vigour. We could see the tears of joy in his eyes when he started talking.
He started his speech saying ‘My advance congratulations to all the artists acting in the film Kannamma. I am here at this place after nearly 52 years and I heard some of you talking on the prevailing and changed conditions you all experience. Nearly 52 years back my dear friend Nadigar Thilakam acted in the film Parasakthi for which I wrote the story and dialogue and the film was directed by Krishnan & Panju. The film was jointly produced by AVM studios and National Perumal. I could recall one of the scenes in that film, which is very apt to compare with the current prevailing scenario.
In that film the family of Gunasekaran who moved to Rangoon will believe that their family will remain happily ever here in India, but the war will separate them. When Gunasekaran returned to India and try to trace the members of his family he could only find them in desperate and broken down condition.
In the same way I am here with you all, and you have adequately explained me your distressed condition. I still believe in the similar way, the family shown in the film Parasakthi cinema prospered and came out of the woods; the cinema family will also improve and become stable.
When I see you all as a family I feel relieved and rejuvenated from all the stress, strain, disturbances and disasters of politics. I can see and understand that all of you here are not comfortable and very happy. But when two unhappy people meet and exchange comforting words, it will bring both of them solace, consolation and a kind of happiness. I feel the same way and get such a type of happiness from you all now.
