Potpourri of titbits about Tamil cinema - Manorama
This incredibly talented artiste has proved herself a good human being and socially conscious person also through her brave act of giving a petition to the chief minister Karunanidhi suggesting and requesting that a law be enacted making it mandatory for any man or woman getting married to submit a doctor’s certificate for their physical fitness and health before marriage. This gesture was received with full appreciation in all quarters. Manorama is always very warm and compassionate towards her fans and fulfills their wish if they want to take photographs with her. I pray to the God that Manorama’s contribution to the celluloid world should continue for more and more years.
The actress who ruled the state!
V. N. Janaki conquered the hearts of all cine-goers through her acting in the film ‘Aayiram thalai vaangiya apoorva Chintamani’ (1947). She did the role of the arrogant Chintamani. She was introduced to cinema by director K. Subramaniam. She was just 13 years old when she was introduced by Subramaniam in his own production ‘Ananthasayanam’ in which he acted as the hero. S. D. Subbulakshmi and M. V. Rajamma were also in the cast.
Manmathavijayam, Kachadevyani, Devakanya, Maanasamratchanam, Rajabarthruhari, Rajamukthi, Mayakuthirai, Velaikkaari, Devaki etc. were her following movies. Her first movie with MGR was Mohini. In the year 1950, when the pair acted in the film Marutha naattu ilavarasi, both fell in love and decided to get married. The marriage was held with the support of K. Subramaniam and A. Kasilingam. An astrologer had predicted to Janaki in the year 1943 that she would have to shoulder a very big responsibility in future to the surprise of all. And, the words of the astrologer proved right when Janaki was chosen to head the government as the chief minister in the year 1987 when MGR died. Janaki had the distinction of being the first woman chief minister of Tamil Nadu. She died in 1996 but she will be remembered forever for her fame and calm nature.
