Potpourri of tidbits about Tamil cinema - Kutty Padmini

Sivaji, Kutty Padmini, Potpourri of titbits about Tamil cinema, kalyanamalai tamil weekly magazine

Though I had offers to act in MGR starrers, I couldn’t accept them for want of time. But I didn’t want to lose the opportunity when the offer for ‘Nam naadu’ came. In the film, I was the daughter while Sridevi was the son for the couple T. K. Bhagavathy – Pandari Bai and Bhagavathy was the elder brother of MGR. During the shooting schedule, MGR would take physical exercise classes for me. He would check whether I did skipping. If I had not done it, he would give me a skipping rope and would ask me to skip during the break. He would make me sit near him during lunch and he would advice me that parents were our first God and that we should never hurt them. I recalled the incidents where I had shown my anger against my mother. I regretted for my behavior and I made amends by showering affection and love on my mother. The credit should go to MGR only for this positive change in my behavior and attitude.

During the time of 13 – 15 years of age, I couldn’t do any role as my age was not suitable for the role of either a girl or a woman. During that period, I concentrated on theatre. I did roles in the stage plays of Mouli, S. Ve. Sekhar and Y. G. Mahendra. When I was sixteen years, MGR offered me a role in his film ‘Ulagam sutrum vaalibhan’. But as the film was to be shot in Japan and the working period would be two months, my mother didn’t agree. Even today, I regret for letting that opportunity go. Then followed ‘Naan ean pirandhean?’, an MGR starrer in which I acted as his younger sister. I was the daughter-in-law of Sivaji Ganesan in his film ‘Nallathoru kudumbham’. I can never forget those great opportunities. I believe it was possible only because of my ‘poorva jenma punyam’.
