A chat with Madhumita, woman-director …
My husband Vijay Venkatraman is a top official in an advertising company in Los Angeles in America. He had done a course in editing and film technology. He has worked as technical manager for many Hollywood films. He is a member of the selection committee of Indian film festival of Los Angeles. He is highly responsible for my enthusiasm to work in the film industry.
Many doubt whether I can sustain in a field which is male-dominated. If we do our work to our full satisfaction and do not bother about anything else, name will come automatically. Gender consciousness disappears when we want to prove that women can also function as effectively as men. We are seeing the ever increasing contribution of women in all the fields. I believe filmmaking is a team work. Right from actors to technicians, everyone cooperated with me.
The theme of the film ‘Vallamai tharayo’ deals with the struggle between the feelings and relationship of a woman. This is a real story that happened in a family known to us. The message is marriage can be made a success through mutual understanding.
I am getting offers from big companies to direct films in other languages too. But I’ll accept the offers only if the story is strong.”
Madhmitha’s self-confidence and enthusiasm speak volumes of her dream of achieving things with all sincerity and hard work. We wish her name be remembered as an eminent woman director.
