During the Stone Age, when humans lived in caves, the man went out for hunting, the woman looked after the ‘house’. As time changed with the civilization undergoing rapid changes, the lifestyle of the woman also underwent drastic changes. Lalitha is very disappointed in her heart on seeing her son helping his wife by doing small tasks like arranging her wardrobe, cutting vegetables etc. But her son doesn’t really have any problem in doing these chores. His wife Nisha is a working woman. There’s nothing wrong in her expecting her husband to help her in the daily chores. Lalitha has not realized that the values and customs that once governed our lives have undergone tremendous changes. Her mother-in-law used to rub down her husband’s legs before going to bed and would go to bed only after he fell asleep. But today, Lalitha herself goes to bed at nine at night while her husband keeps reading till ten. Whenever Lalitha wished, her husband used to take her to her parents’ house and would again go to fetch her back. But today, the scenario is totally different. Nisha is taking care of many things right from banking to children’s school admission. We cannot compare those days with the present. We should be prepared to accept the changes wrought by Time if we are to have peace of mind.
If the elders realize their responsibility in helping the young couple for a happy marriage, the woman would surely shower love and affection on her in-laws. She’ll also show respect and will behave in a responsible manner. The young newly married woman will be in a confused state of mind, not able to discern what is right, what is wrong. Cinema, television, friends, Western culture etc. would have influenced her in a negative way. She would naturally be afraid of living in a joint family. If only the elders instill self-confidence and trust in her mind through their right approach, she’ll surely prove herself a ‘Sivasakthi’!
