Save marriage … save the institution …
Save marriage … save the institution …, Vazhkai vasapadum, Kalyanamalai Magazine

Lakshmi and Gokul are software engineers. They are in love with each other. Once, Lakshmi told Gokul about a colleague of hers, who ditched his lover by marrying a girl of his parents’ choice. The objection of his parents was the girl did not belong to the same caste. But, unable to forget her, the boy continued his friendship with his lover even after his marriage. The wife came to know about her husband’s continuing affair with his lover and filed a divorce suit. The lover girl also is blackmailing him demanding money. The boy, not knowing how to tackle the situation has become a wreck and alcoholic. His life has been totally ruined. When Lakshmi narrated this story, Gokul said that whether the marriage was finalized due to the parents’ pressure or whether the couple married against the will of the parents, the couple should take a vow that they would remain truthful to the marriage.

“I am ready to take the promise, are you ready?” Gokul asked Lakshmi in an enchanting tone. When love becomes compulsory after marriage, it ensures everlasting happiness. If we want marriage, let us be truthful. Let us not hide anything from the other party. Let us not invite the risk of divorce by hiding facts. If we speak the truth, we will be respected. We can be proud of our integrity. The celebration of marriage is not the end, it is only the beginning of a life in which two human beings unite and start living under the same roof.

Even today, I share with my children the joy my husband and I got when we exchanged our views before marriage, when we went out together for shopping and for selecting the invitation card etc. My husband made me wait for two hours on the day when we had planned to go out, my wearing salwar-kameez for the reception etc. are all small things that we enjoy recalling even today. The parents of both my husband and me gave us freedom trusting us fully and we are proud to say that we never misused it.

Before concluding, let me say one thing – Gone are the days when the parents thought that somehow or other the marriage should be done; today they think, think and think and are very clear about how to do it!
