The day of celebration of marriage is a day on which the couple starts a new life with the blessings of the God and the relatives and friends who attend the event. Money is being spent like water on varied items like dresses, jewelry, decoration, feast, gifts, marriage hall, reception, expenditure for the ‘sambhandhi’ party etc. And, the expenditure goes even beyond this till the couple returns from honeymoon. The budget covers huge sums starting from lakhs to crores depending on the spending capacity of the two parties. Features from other cultures like mehandhi, dancing, bringing the groom to the marriage hall in a procession on horse, registration of marriage, buffet, party with friends etc. are included in the celebration rendering it the color of a function of diverse cultures.
There are people who want to celebrate the wedding with all grandeur but are restricted by constraints like lack of funds. And, there are people, who want grandeur at any cost and there are people who want to exhibit their wealth through ostentation and there are people who save and earmark a huge sum for the celebration expenditure.
Today, whether the budget is low or high, the entire responsibility of celebration is handed over to an agency on ‘turn-key’ basis. Gone are the days when the elders were always on their feet running hither and thither, attending on the boy’s party, arranging provisions for the feast etc. Today, even the mothers of the couple go to beauty parlors to get their faces done to attend the reception in the evening. Money plays the major role in all these ‘novel’ changes with ostentation becoming the rule of the day. Even the ‘akshadhai’ that is sprayed on the couple by the elders while blessing them is being kept in ornamental bowls.
